The Art of Polo: Tradition, Elegance & Etiquette
Polo is one of the world’s most prestigious and elegant sports, long associated with royalty, heritage, and international diplomacy. In the UK, it holds a distinguished place in high society, while in the Arab world it carries deep cultural roots, symbolising tradition, horsemanship, and leadership, values that continue to resonate across generations. Bringing together sport, networking, and a refined social experience, polo events offer a unique blend of competition and connection in an exceptional summer setting.
Basic Rules of Polo:
- Each team has 4 players on horseback.
- The objective is to score goals by hitting the ball through the opposing team’s goal posts using a mallet.
- Matches are divided into periods called chukkas (usually 4–8, each lasting about 7 minutes).
- Players must follow the “line of the ball” rule to ensure safety and fair play.
- Controlled shoulder-to-shoulder contact (riding-off) is allowed.
- Horses are changed between chukkas to ensure their welfare and performance.
Dress Code & Traditions:
- As a summer event, guests are encouraged to wear light, elegant attire.
- Women often opt for dresses in soft or vibrant seasonal colours, paired with hats; fascinators are optional rather than expected. Dresses, skirts, or tailored trousers are expected.
- Men typically wear smart summer suits or blazers with light shirts; ties are optional depending on the setting.
During the breaks between chukkas, guests are invited to take part in the traditional “divot stomping,” where spectators walk onto the field to press down the turf displaced during play, a long-standing and social polo custom.
